A windy camp

Today is Friday the 13th of June and a full moon all rolled together. For us it caused another change in our travel plans. We justed watched the local weather forecast and are not pleased with what we heard and saw for the next ten days. The temperatures will range from mid 20s to low 50s with lots of rain and snow. We also went online to check on updates for the opening of the Road to the Sun. Maybe by the 21st as they are dealing with 50 feet of snow over a 2 mile section of road. With more snow forecast that date will probably move again. Plan A - Rent a U-Haul and drive to Whitefish and ride from there. After calling all dealers inwith 100 miles that plan fell apart. Plan B - Turn south and ride to Helena and continue on our orginal travel route. Plan B won out, so we packed up and headed for the grocery store for some suplies for the next couple of days to Helena. The ride to Augusta was only 27 miles so leaving at 8:30 am won't cause us any problems. The weather was great for riding, just a breeze and about 55f. The first 5 miles was just slightly uphill and then a good climb for 3 miles. Upon reaching the upper plateau we experienced some great scenery and a view of egg mountain. Then out of nowhere the wind started to blow and we had to put on coats and long tights. We rode directly into the wind for several hours and at times almost came to a complete stop. The downhills were even very slow-thats not a good sign. We finally made it to Gilman around 1:30pm and stopped to read the historical signage about the railroad and the rise and fall of the town. Only 2 more miles to Augusta and shelter. The Wagon Wheel Campground was empty and looked like we could get out of the howling wind so we found a campsite and checked in. We stuffed our gear in the tent and rode downtown to see the old general store. A must see, dating back over 100 years. Back at the campground we started on Plan C. We will ride back to Great Falls, store our trikes and fly home. We will take the pickup/camper trailer and undertake a road trip and in the process retrive our trikes and see the sights we didn't see on our trikes. The summer is still young and life is too short to wage a war with "Mother Nature". She will always win in the end.
