A turning point
We were awake at 5:30am and decided to go to the Conoco station for a breakfast sandwich and a hot drink. The tent and rainfly are wet from a heavy dew. At 7:15am things had dried so we could pack up and head out. We made our way north and west out of town with one last stop at a Loaf n' Jug for a couple of cold drinks for later in morning. The frontage road to Vaughn wasn't busy and was nearly flat so it made for an easy ride. We encountered some shoulder work a short distance from the interstate interchange but it didn't hold us up. In Vaughn we stopped for a bathroom break and a cold drink. Now we are ready to move on down the road. We made the turn north toward Fairfield and had a gentle but steady climb for about 3 miles to reach the plateau of farm land to the north. We were stopped for about 5 minutes while the construction company finished some chip and seal work further down the road. We let all the vehicles go by and then we headed out. We stopped in Fairfield for lunch and couldn't get over all the grain storage silos along the road. We rolled out of town toward Freezeout Lake. Stopped for photos and read all the information about the lake. We had some great views of the snow capped Rocky Mountains just to our left most of the day. The ride on the plateau was pretty gentle and the slight tailwind put us in Choteau (Sho-toe) at 3:30pm. We checked into the Big Sky Motel after triking 53 miles today. We cleaned up and walked downtown to check out the place. Not much going on but did find a small grocery store. We bought some microwave meals and headed back to our room to have supper. We watched tv and hit the sack about 9:30pm. Rain is forecast for overnight.
