Plan "C"
We were up at 6:00am to a cool 44f and a foggy start to the day. We ate a rollup and packed our wet gear for the 53 mile trip to Great Falls. Montana Road 21 was 2 miles north of town and we were warned it was very danagerous mostly because of the high volume of road traffic. What the hell, it was early on a saturday morning so we decided to give it a go. We followed the abandonded railroad roadbed for miles and wondered why it was built in the first place. The morning fog was slowly turning into mist as we cranked our way down the road. Ten miles in and not one single vehicle. After cresting our second little hill the mist turned to a light rain and 5 miles later we were in the Corner Store in Simms drinking hot chocolate. We had traveled 23 miles in just l hour and 50 minutes and only saw 7 vehicles. Pretty darn good in my opinion. We spent about 1 hour visiting with storekeeper while the rain came down by the bucketfulls. It was nearly 10am. when we finally headed toward the little burg of Ramble. The rain was coming down in sheets when we spotted the Ramble Bar. We parked under a huge tree and headed inside to warmup and dry off. We smelled lunch and just couldn't pass on a cheeseburger and onion rings. Now we are starting to feel better. An hour later the rain lets up and we hit the road again. This time we are trying to make it to Vaughn and the Conoco station. We rolled in just as the sky opened up and this time it lasted about 1 hour. In the meantime we read everything that was laying around the laundry room. Finally, about 3:00pm we headed out in the sprinkles for the last 8 miles to Great Falls and our motel room. The dirt on the road in the construction area has now become a sloppy, muddy mess that now engulfs the trikes and everything attached thereto, including us. At the motel the lady just shakes her head and says don't make too big of a mess. She gave us a whole bunch of old towels to aid in the cleanup. After a couple of hours we have everything cleaned up and drying. Made plans to fly out Monday at 1:30pm. We won't miss this weather one bit.
