DAY 23, July 6, 2010
Of course we started the day in Cordova with more rain. We loaded our wet gear and rode to the ferry terminal for the short trip to Whittier. Once in Whittier (where it was still raining), we quickly made our way to the train station for the trip to Anchorage. Bicycles are not allowed in the train tunnel between Whittier and Portage, so we had to load the trikes on the train. When we got there for the 12:45 train, the conductor informed us that the Anchorage train didn't leave until 6:45 p.m. He took pitty on us, standing there in the rain, and let us on the 12:45 excursion train to Grand View -- which just gets back to Whittier in time to be the 6:45 train to Anchorage. So we spent the next 9 hours riding around on the train. That was sure better than sitting in the rain for 6 hours, plus we got to enjoy the scenic trip for free. That conductor is our hero. When we arrived in Anchorage we found a place to stay right downtown and are now safe and warm -- we'll work on getting dry tomorrow.

Wow! I decided to see the progress of the trip going in chronological order and when I got to the last posting, what a surprise! How long are you going to be in Anchorage?
ReplyDeleteStill haven't seen any wildlife, but it seems you've come across eagles and bears so far! I did the drive to explore Turnagain Arm last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the sights!
Well, if you're going to be in town for a while and want to meet up, I get off from work between 4 and 5. If you already continued on, safe travels and I look forward to more adventure stories!
